SD43 valedictorian gives free debate lessons to Coquitlam teens

Dana Mizuguchi, who recently graduated from School District 43’s Inquiry Hub, has partnered with United Way BC to create The Debate Café.

A 2024 valedictorian who was featured in the Tri-City News last month is offering free classes to teach teens how to debate.

Dana Mizuguchi, who recently graduated from School District 43’s (SD43) Inquiry Hub, has partnered with United Way BC to create "The Debate Café."

She said her aim is to give high school students an opportunity to learn how to think critically and speak publicly “in an accessible and engaging way while connecting with their community.”

The sessions are casual, in an open space and provide snacks for participants. No experience is needed.

The next lesson is scheduled for Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Room 1 at the Maillardville Community Centre (1200 Cartier Ave., Coquitlam) from 4 to 7 p.m.

To register for The Debate Café, you can visit Eventbrite.ca.

The next class is on Friday, July 12 at the civic recreation hub.
