Two Coquitlam societies will split $8,500 in cultural project grants from Metro Vancouver.

Today, Aug. 9, the regional agency announced it will hand out $5,000 to the United Scottish Cultural Society for ScotFestBC, which hosts its annual Highland games at Town Centre Park in Coquitlam in June, plus $3,500 to Place des Arts for its events at the Maillardville centre.

In total, Metro Vancouver awarded $300,000 to 57 arts and culture groups in the region to help create programs, reach new audiences and cover project staffing and administrative costs.

For this year’s round, Metro received 162 bids from organizations seeking more than $1.3 million; the successful candidates receive up to $10,000 for a proposed project.

“As someone who has been a music lover since a young age, I can certainly appreciate the impact that a thriving arts and culture community has on people’s lives,” said Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley, chairperson of Metro Vancouver’s board of directors, in a news release.
