Coquitlam RCMP instituted a brief lockdown at several schools and a community centre in Port Coquitlam Thursday afternoon after receiving complaints about a man walking with a gun.

The gun in question turned out to be a pellet gun, which is not illegal, said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Jamie Chung.

"As a precaution we locked down the schools in the area and responded to the call," Chung said.

The call came in around 1 p.m. and the schools, including Irvine elementary, Minnekhada middle school, BC Christian Academy and École des Pionniers de Maillardville, as well as Hyde Creek Rrecreation Centre, were locked down until approximately 1:45 p.m.

"Once we located the man and confirmed the pellet gun we removed the lockdown," Chung said.
