School traffic safety an issue in Coquitlam district

Calming traffic around schools and ensuring student safety are the goals of a new committee established by School District 43. Next Tuesday, Oct.

Calming traffic around schools and ensuring student safety are the goals of a new committee established by School District 43.

Next Tuesday, Oct. 15, SD43's Traffic Safety Task Force will meet with parents to get their feedback about traffic concerns at a meeting to be held from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Gallery Room at Winslow Centre, 100 Winslow Ave. Coquitlam.

Ivano Cecchini, principal of facilities initiatives, said the district is following up on traffic issues with the goal of establishing a committee to come up with solutions. The city of Coquitlam is also working with the district on traffic safety and the other cities will be asked to join the task force in future.

"Between city of Coquitlam and ourselves, we want to work together a little more to try and work out some of the traffic issues," Cecchini said. "The first stage is to gather up information."

To participate in the meeting, which is sponsored by the District Parent Advisory Committee, register at dpac43trafficsafety.eventbrite.ca (preferred method) or by phone at 604-939-3690, leaving your name, phone number and number of people attending.

WALK TO SCHOOL

The safety committee ramps up as International Walk to School Month (IWalk), hits its stride with SD43 schools taking part.

At Maillard middle, students have been encouraged to walk to school all week this week and today (Friday), they are expected to participate in a special wrap up, with "breakfast" popsicles of fruit juice and yogurt handed out to students.

Dash BC, the Directorate of Agencies for School Health, is also supporting the initiative, providing sunglasses to winners of the walk-to-school event.
