The quick actions of a passing driver on Lougheed Highway Wednesday night are being credited for preventing a vehicle roll-over from becoming a tragedy.

A man, a woman and an infant had to be pulled out of a water-filled ditch near Colony Farm Park Road at about 11:30 p.m. and Coquitlam Assistant Fire Chief Stu Aspinall said a woman witnessed the car veering off the road into the ditch. If she hadn't, nobody would have seen the stranded family from the road, he said.

Firefighters, police and ambulance arrived quickly to help the woman and the infant out of the ditch, which was covered in brambles, while the injured man needed to be extricated and carried on a stretcher to an ambulance.

All three were taken to hospital and there is no word on their condition or an explanation as to why the SUV veered off the highway and into the ditch, landing on its side.

"That's being investigated by the RCMP," Aspinall said.
