Port Moody’s Remembrance Day ceremony is moving back to St. Johns Street.
Tuesday, March 25, council approved a request from the city’s Legion to return the annual commemoration of Canada’s veterans to the corner of St. Johns and Kyle streets. The past three years it's been staged at a small cenotaph on Spring Street.
The ceremony had previously been held on St. Johns for several years while Legion Branch 119 was being redeveloped.
A staff report said the location behind the Legion’s new facility proved “very awkward.”
The move will require an additional $17,000 on top of its current $23,000 budget, mostly to cover costs associated with closing busy St. Johns for the ceremony.
As well, the city will waive about $1,000 in rental fees so the Legion can host two rehearsals at Kyle Centre.
And another $1,000 will be spent on 12 new wreaths, as the current ones are “becoming old,” said the report.
