The Independent Investigations Office of BC has sent a report about a 2023 incident involving a Port Moody police officer that left a motorcyclist injured to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has submitted a report to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges in a 2023 incident that left a motorcyclist seriously injured following a collision with a Port Moody Police Department (PMPD) SUV being driven by an officer.

According to the IIO, the July 25 incident began when an officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a black motorcycle.

The motorcyclist failed to stop and the officer broadcast the information to fellow officers.

Shortly afterward, another officer driving a police SUV near the intersection of Valour and Glenayre drives observed the motorcycle coming towards them. There was a collision and the motorcyclist was seriously injured.

Following an investigation, Sandra J. Hentzen, the IIO’s interim chief civilian director, reviewed the evidence and determined there was reasonable grounds the officer may have committed offences in relation to the use of their police vehicle.

The BC Prosecution Service will now determine if there is a substantial likelihood any charges would result in a conviction and whether prosecution of the officer would be in the public interest.
