Election finance disclosures released Monday show many Port Moody candidates laid out big bucks in the hopes of winning a seat on city council.
The 16 candidates spent just over $252,000 on the 2014 election campaign, most of which was dished out by the two mayoral candidates in their tight race for the top job.
Incumbent Mayor Mike Clay, who won by about 800 votes, spent about $300 less than the $44,000 he raised, in a campaign that cost $9.68 per vote.
Challenger Gaetan Royer, PoMo's former city manager, spent a whopping $61,768.31 to sway 3,450 voters at a cost of $17.90 per vote.
Clay appears to have spent the bulk of his budget on traditional advertising - pamphlets, signs and newspaper ads - while Royer opted for phone calls through a call centre which, among other items, was listed as a shared expense with council candidates Rick Glumac, Zoe Royer, Barbara Junker and Anne Ladouceur.
Those shared expenses totaled about $49,000.
Among the council candidates Tom Bell spent the least ($250) while Coun. Zoe Royer spent the most ($31,957.92). Coun. Rick Glumac, who topped the polls with $4,493 votes, spent $15,680.
Incumbent candidates who narrowly lost their seats were Gerry Nuttall, who spent just over $9,918, and Rosemary Small, who spent $10,636. Both of their campaigns were largely self-funded.
