A Port Moody resident will perform a work-in-progress this week as part of Dance In Vancouver (DIV).

Tasha Faye Evans will be at the Scotiabank Dance Centre (677 Davie St.) on Friday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. to show and talk about Seed during The Dance Centre’s 14th biennial celebration of B.C.’s contemporary dance scene.

“Seed is a personal exploration of Sxwoxwiyam, the original stories written into these lands to remind us how to show up in the world,” the DIV website states.

“Moved by the shapes and teachings of the ancestor’s eye, this work is an exploration of the fundamental elements of Coast Salish art and design.”

Admission to Evans’ event is free and no registration is required; Starr Muranko of Raven Spirit Dance will also showcase two works-in-progress prior to Evans’ presentation.

In the Tri-Cities, Evans is best known for founding the “In the Presence of Ancestors” project, in partnership with the Port Moody Ecological Society, that’s designed to see five carved house posts raised in Rocky Point Park and around Shoreline Trail.

The DIV festival, which runs from Nov. 20 to 24, also includes performances by:

  • Company 605
  • FakeKnot
  • Lee Su-Feh
  • Anya Saugstad
  • Action at a Distance/Vanessa Goodman

This year’s guest international curator is Anthea Lewis, the founder of Blulilli Projects UK, in association with Dance Umbrella (UK) — London’s International Dance Festival and FABRIC International.

“Dance In Vancouver works on many levels,” said executive director Mirna Zagar, in a news release.

“It’s a great opportunity for audiences to experience work by local artists. Our artists get the chance to build their national and international connections and the presenters become more informed on our dynamic and diverse dance scene.”
