A simple plate of flapjacks this weekend could help reach a major milestone for the Tri-Cities.
Port Moody Fire Rescue's Canada Day weekend pancake breakfast is set for Saturday and Sunday (July 1–2) and organizers are hoping this can spark a successful campaign that reaches $1 million for local charities.
According to its website, more than $925,000 has been collected in 45 years.
The money has been distributed to non-profits like Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation, SHARE Family and Community Services and Crossroads Hospice Society.
That includes $60,000 from last year's breakfast, which welcomed 4,000 people to the Fire Hall #1 over two days and marked a two-year return after going virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Luka Pavicic, president of the Port Moody Firefighters Charitable Society, tells the Tri-City News is hoping a larger crowd can participate, feast on good eats and interact with staff this year.
A goal has been set at $65,000 for the 46th edition of the fundraiser, as well as $100,000 by the end of the year to push the meter above that seven-figure plateau.
Other avenues for the cause, in addition to the $5 a plate at the pancake breakfast, include a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction and the generosity of those that can't participate in person.
Items up for grabs in the silent auction, which ends at 3 p.m. PDT on Monday (July 3), includes:
- gift cards to Coquitlam Centre
- Seattle Mariners tickets
- BC Lions tickets
- golf at Westwood Plateau
- spa days
The 46th Port Moody Firefighters Charitable Society's pancake breakfast runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon July 1 and 2 at Fire Hall #1 (150 Newport Dr.).
The menu consists of pancakes, sausage, yogurt, coffee, tea and juice.

The fundraising total has surpassed $4,700, as of this publication (June 29), including $4,000 in the 50/50 pot.
