Port Coquitlam is gearing up for its big Canada Day event this Saturday (July 1).
Among the details are plans for road closures that could affect local residents.
According to a city news release, the following traffic/safety control measures will be put into place July 1:
- Mary Hill pedestrian overpass and Castle Park trails
- Closed at 8 p.m.
- Citadel Drive from Confederation Drive to Castle Crescent
- No parking 6 a.m. to midnight
- Vehicles must be moved from the above locations by 6 a.m. to avoid being towed.
- No parking 6 a.m. to midnight
- Citadel Drive from Pitt River Road to Castle Crescent
- Local traffic only after 6 p.m.
The following street closures will also be in effect from 6 p.m. to midnight for evening festivities:
- Colonial Drive at Citadel Drive
- Nova Scotia Avenue (both entrances) at Citadel Drive (local access for residents only)
- Castle Crescent (both entrances) at Citadel Drive (local access for residents only)
Parking is available at the schools in the area. A map is available online on pthe Canada Day page of the City of Port Coquitlam's website.
Local residents affected by these road closures will still have access to their homes but they may be required to show their B.C. driver's license to officials at the checkpoints.
Detours are in place and residents should watch for signage and traffic control personnel.
Shuttles available
Event-goers are encouraged to take transit, walk, cycle or enjoy free round-trip shuttle services to and from various locations throughout Port Coquitlam. The shuttles will run every 30 minutes from 12 to 11 p.m. (times may be delayed due to traffic) from the locations listed below:
North Side:
- Minnekhada Middle School
- Terry Fox Secondary
Downtown:
- Westcoast Express Port Coquitlam Station (Wheelchair accessible bus will be marked)
South Side:
- Mary Hill Elementary
- Kilmer Elementary
Shuttle busses will drop off event-goers at Castle Park. Strollers are allowed on the shuttle bus and should be folded and placed in its luggage area.
A wheelchair-accessible bus will be available.
