The sixth-ranked Terry Fox Ravens will play No. 2 Dover Bay in the semi-finals at the BC School Sports AAAA boys basketball championships Friday at 8:45 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
The upstart Ravens, comprised mostly of juniors and sophomores, upset the Vancouver College Fighting Irish 92-83 in their quarterfinal game Thursday.
The Irish were ranked third in the tournament.
Grade 10 guard Marvin Reyes was the spark plug that almost singlehandedly drove Terry Fox into the next round. He scored 41 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead all Fox shooters. Jayson Ikani’s 17 points was the next highest total.
Terry Fox trailed Vancouver College 27-15 after the first quarter and 45-31 at the half..
But after the break, Reyes and Ikani caught fire.
Reyes scored 14 points and Ikani shot 60 per cent from the foul line to fuel a 32-point third quarter that put the Ravens in front 63-59 heading into the final frame.
Reyes' domination continued as he added another 13 points to his total and the Irish ran out of fight.
Prior to the tournament, Terry Fox coach Rich Chambers, who had guided most of the younger players into the senior team’s ranks, said inconsistency had been the team’s kryponite in a roller coaster season of unexpected wins over tough opponents and struggles against lesser teams. He added he wasn’t sure which kind of Ravens team would take to the arena bowl floor in Langley.
Thursday’s win over Vancouver College avenged a 45-point loss to the Irish in Fox’s first game of the season last November and eight-point setbacks at the Tsumura Invitational tournament in December and the Ravens’ own Legal Beagle tournament in January.
Fox and Dover Bay did not cross paths during the season.
The Dolphins won all six of its games in the Vancouver Island North league and 20 of its 23 total games. The team defeated Holy Cross 85-72 in its quarterfinal earlier Thursday.
In consolation round play, the Centennial Centaurs beat Semiahmoo 74-51, and the Heritage Woods Kodiaks defeated Mount Baker 72-53.
