Port Coquitlam’s Riverside Rapids used the long ball to tame the Yale Lions 78-70 in their quarterfinal match at the BC School Sports AAAA senior girls basketball championships, Thursday at the Langley Events Centre.
Third-ranked Riverside plays No. 2 Seaquam Seahawks in tonight’s late semi-final, 8:30 p.m. at the LEC’s south court, with the winner earning a spot in Saturday’s final that will be played in the main arena bowl for the first time.
Against the Lions, Rapids’ shooters drained 10 three-pointers, half of them by senior guard Maliyah Mendoza. She also scored seven free throws.
Anabelle Neufeld led all Riverside scorers with 23 points and was recognized as the player of the game, while Jorja Hart contributed 14 points.
The Rapids surrendered the first basket of the game to the Lions but then never trailed again. Riverside led 27-21 at the end of the first quarter, 43-40 at halftime and 61-50 heading into the final frame.
In an earlier game, the Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils defeated Port Moody’s Heritage Woods Kodiaks 56-30.
The Blue Devils face Tweedsmuir this afternoon with the winner moving on to play for ninth place on Saturday. The best the Kodiaks can do is 13th if it beats Okanagan Mission in Friday’s first game of the day.
