A new north-south arterial road is expected to open in Port Coquitlam's Dominion Triangle this month.
The Fremont Connector will improve access to the Lougheed Highway and Pitt River bridge, while making it easier for motorists to get in and out of the Dominion Triangle. The four lane road will run from the Lougheed Highway to Dominion Avenue, linking with Burns Road.
"The Dominion Triangle will bring our community a diverse range of jobs, from retail to commerce to industrial," said Mayor Greg Moore. "The Fremont Connector is an important piece of the developing road network in that area and will help us grow our local economy while improving access for our residents and businesses."
In a press release on Friday, the city also announced that it is re-assessing the need for an extension of the Fremont Connector beyond Dominion Avenue.
The city's official community plan calls for a four-lane road all the way to Victoria Drive, but staff is now saying that a two-lane road may be all that is required beyond Prairie Avenue.
"After re-evaluating potential traffic demands, population and employment projects to 2031, the city has determined that four lanes will eventually be needed from Lougheed Highway to Prairie Avenue, but that lower volumes of traffic may support two lanes north of Prairie," said a press release.
Future extensions of the road would follow the pace of development in the area and funding. The current five-year financial plan does not have funding set aside for the extension of the connector and staff said it would be monitoring the impacts of the new Fremont Connector on Burns Road and other northeast PoCo streets.
"We want to reassure our residents that when we begin to plan for any extension of Fremont, we will fully engage the community and will considerate he environment, social and land use effects of any decision," Moore said.
