Brandon Wong is hoping his newly-claimed "all-star" status can help send his Regina Rams football team to the national championship.

The Port Coquitlam athlete was named a Canada West conference football defensive all-star on Monday, Nov. 4.

Wong, a second-year linebacker, was one of four teammates to be named to the annual list, solidifying the Rams as having one of the best defenses from the 2024 regular season.

And Wong himself was a unanimous selection, meaning every opposing coach had him top ranked at his position.

"He's one of the hardest working players on the team," said Regina head coach Mark McConkey in a release, who credits Wong for battling through a serious injury in the off-season.

"He was able to return and solidify himself as that starter at sam linebacker and really thrive at that position."

Wong is now two wins from a spot in the U SPORTS title game. Regina faces provincial-rivals Saskatchewan Huskies in the 87th Hardy Cup Canada West final today, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. Pacific.

He recorded several new career high stats, including his very first sack as a member of U SPORTS — Canada's highest level of university sports.

Wong brought down Alberta quarterback Cade Labrecque with three minutes left in the final frame, a loss of seven yards that forced the Golden Bears to punt and ultimately help the Rams to a 29-22 win on Oct. 25.

To date, the Centennial Secondary alum also tallied one interception, two pass deflections, 17 solo tackles and 16 assisted takedowns in eight games this year.

In 2023, Wong recorded one pass deflection, 15 solo tackles and eight assisted takedowns as a freshman.

Wong was named to Team Canada's under-16 four-down football team in 2019.

That same year with Centennial, he led the Centaurs with 27 tackles in four games as a Grade 10 student.

Wong then left for New Hampshire for two seasons with Phillips Exeter Academy's football program.
