A new province-wide recycling program that started Monday had a smooth shift in Port Coquitlam and Port Moody, say officials from both cities.
City spokespersons for PoCo and PoMo reported a "seamless transfer" to the Multi-Material BC system this week.
PoCo staff have logged several inquiries since MMBC launched May 19, including concerns about plastic bags no longer being accepted in the blue cart (they can be returned to an MMBC depot or grocery stores). Still, some PoCo residents are pleased about the new items that can now be recycled, such as hot and cold drink cups, said Pardeep Purewal.
In Port Moody, staff have fielded dozens of calls from residents about MMBC - most of whom are asking for additional information or clarification while the rest are expressing concern about having to take glass to Coquitlam depots, said Dave Teixeira.
Port Coquitlam and Port Moody are handling the MMBC recycling themselves while Coquitlam is allowing the agency to manage the recycling collection contracts in its city. They begin July 2 to coincide with the city's change-over to the new garbage/green waste pick-up.
