Port Coquitlam pitcher Curtis Taylor is a step closer to finally making it to Major League Baseball.

Monday, March 24, the 29-year-old right-hand reliever was assigned to the Memphis Redbirds, the top minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals signed Taylor to a minor league contract on February 10 and assigned him to the AA Springfield Cardinals. Two weeks later he was placed on the team’s restricted list, which meant he was still part of the organization but could not play.

Taylor did get to face one batter during a spring training game March 1 between the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals.

St. Louis is Taylor’s seventh MLB team, but he’s yet to play a regular season game in the big leagues.

Taylor has reached the top AAA affiliate teams of the Toronto Blue Jays, Nationals, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs. He spent the last two seasons pitching in Mexico.

Taylor started his baseball journey in Coquitlam Little League and the Coquitlam Reds in the Premier Baseball League before heading to the University of British Columbia.

In 2016, he was selected in the fourth round of the MLB draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Since then, he’s played for 16 teams, including Canada at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
