Residents in north east Port Coquitlam will get the first crack at a new leak detection system that will keep water mains in good repair.
The City of Port Coquitlam will be testing water mains and services from Jan. 7 to 11 in neighbourhoods north of Prairie Avenue as part of its new leak detection program.
Taking place northeast of Prairie Avenue and Wellington Street, the testing is non-intrusive and is not anticipated to affect the water quality or supply in the area. The tester will make every attempt to minimize noise and supply disruptions.
Most of the testing will take place between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. to reduce transient noise, which affects the acoustic testing equipment. Some additional testing may occur from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The testing vehicle will be marked.
More and more cities are initiating leak detection programs to reduce the costs and environmental implications associated with water leaks, according to a press release. The acoustic leak detection equipment sends sound waves through the pipes to accurately identify both the location and size of leaks.
Following a successful pilot project last year, the city selected this area for the first deployment given the pipe material and age, as well as ground conditions that tend to conceal leaks.
