PoMo aims for rec centre roof grant

The city of Port Moody will apply for a grant to help pay for a new roof on the recreation complex.

The city of Port Moody will apply for a grant to help pay for a new roof on the recreation complex.

The roof over the old rec centre, curling rink and skaters' lobby have required regular repairs for several years and, according to staff, the roof is now well past its prime. It was also found that repairing all the roof sections now, instead of in pieces over time, would save at least $50,000.

Mack Kirk Roofing and Sheet Metal won the contract, worth $332,632, and is now working on the PoMo facility.

Council approved staff's recommendation to apply for the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund grant through Western Economic Diversification of Canada. If the application is successful, the grant could pay for up to half the cost of the project.

Another part of the roof - the underside of the roof overhang that stretches around the weight room - will also need repairing soon. The wood panelling was recently taken down after it was found moisture had pooled inside the roof structure and damaged the panels, said Ron Higo, the city's director of community services.

"From a design perspective, it continues the ceiling from the inside to the outside through the glass... but I don't think wood was probably the best type of fascia up there," Higo said.

It's not yet known how much repairs to that part of the roof will cost.

Higo said the project wouldn't be a warranty item but staff are looking at who should foot the bill.

"That's something we'll need to look at, to determine if it's something somebody else should have been responsible for with the control of the moisture," Higo said.
