Politicians list their assets, income

This week, local elected officials revealed their financial records to give Tri-City residents a glimpse of what they own and owe.

Under the Financial Disclosure Act, municipal politicians' assets, liabilities and sources of income are unveiled on Jan. 15.

But the way the statements are structured, elected representatives don't have offer up many personal details. Mortgages or money borrowed for household and personal living expenses need not be listed on the provincial forms, for example. And councillors and mayors aren't required to disclose what land they own outside of the community unless they're seeking provincial office.

This year, Coquitlam Coun. Linda Reimer - who is running for the BC Liberals in Port Moody-Coquitlam in May - noted she owns a property in Okanagan Falls. She also works as a real estate assistant for her husband.

Coun. Selina Robinson, who was acclaimed by the NDP to run in Coquitlam-Maillardville, also draws an income outside of city hall: She has a home-based business, Robinson Ergonomics, and owns Selina Robinson Counselling.

Meanwhile, the Tri-Cities' mayors have outside jobs as well running their cities and being on the Metro Vancouver and TransLink boards:

Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart is the proprietor of Stewart Communications;

Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore is the owner of Livable Region Consulting Inc.;

and Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay works for Tero Consulting and owns TTS Automation Inc., a computer consulting business.

The 2013 financial disclosures are not posted online, which is not a requirement under the provincial act; the statements are available for public viewing during office hours at the city clerk's offices.
