Port Moody police are calling for help after someone tried to light a fire near an elementary school three times this month.

Spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias said officers and firefighters were at Glenayre Elementary (495 Glencoe Dr.) on:

  • Nov. 9 at around 10 p.m.
  • Nov. 11 at around 6 p.m.
  • Nov. 24 at around 4 p.m.

He said the fires were deliberately set close to the school, at the rear, using aerosol spray cans to propel the flames.

In Sunday’s incident, an eyewitness saw a teenage boy in dark clothing leaving the school grounds on a bicycle, police told the Tri-City News.

“All of the fires have occurred outside of school hours and have been set in very close proximity to the school structure,” stated Zacharias in a news release. “There has been no damage to school property, fortunately”.

Police and School District 43 have since stepped up patrols at the school campus.

Anyone with information about the attempted arsons is asked to call the Port Moody Police Department at 604-461-3456 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to remain anonymous.
