With Fire Prevention Week starting Sunday, Oct. 6, Port Coquitlam firefighters are reminding the community to check the smoke alarms in their homes.
The theme of this year's designated week, which runs until Oct. 12, is "Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You" — a campaign designed to educate the public about the need to have functioning smoke detectors.
The department says smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a residential fire by 54 per cent; that means about three out of five fire fatalities happen in homes without a smoke alarm or a functioning detector.
Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe:
- install smoke alarms in bedrooms, outside sleeping areas like hallways and on every level of the home, including basements
- make sure the smoke alarms meet the needs of all residents, including people with sensory or physical disabilities
- press the test button monthly to ensure they work
- replace smoke alarms every decade
For vulnerable residents, Port Coquitlam Fire and Emergency Services provides free smoke alarms.
As well, fire prevention officers can make home visits to show the best place to install a smoke alarm and to test existing detectors. To sign up, visit the City of Port Coquitlam website.
