POCO COUNCIL PREVIEW: City considers prohibiting discharge of crossbows

Port Coquitlam councillors will consider a bylaw amendment at their meeting on Monday that would prohibit the discharge of crossbows within the municipality.

Port Coquitlam councillors will consider a bylaw amendment at their meeting on Monday that would prohibit the discharge of crossbows within the municipality.

The current Firearms Prohibition Bylaw already restricts the discharge of firearms and spring guns, however crossbows and bow and arrows are not included in either category. Staff is recommending that council amend the bylaw to include the weapons in the regulations.

Councillors will vote on the changes Monday at 7 p.m. in Port Coquitlam council chambers.

Even with the changes to the regulations a person is still allowed to fire a weapon in the municipality under the Livestock Act if they are protecting livestock from attack.

ATM FEES

PoCo councillors are also expected to consider changes to its licensing fees for automated teller machines.

Operators of ATM dispensers in the municipality currently pay $500 per year to license the machines, the highest rate in Metro Vancouver, which averages $165.

City staff are recommending decreasing the $500 fee to $170, bringing the total inline with five nearby communities, including New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.

Council is expected to vote on the report at Monday's meeting and a public input opportunity is expected to be held on the issue.
