Photos: Coquitlam school soars at Fraser North cross country championships

The Fraser North cross country championships at Coquitlam's Mundy Park, featured hundreds of runners from schools in the Tri-Cities, Burnaby, New Westminster and Maple Ridge.

Coquitlam’s Gleneagle Secondary School won the senior girls team competition and finished second in the senior boys at the Fraser North zone cross country championships, held Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Mundy Park.

The event featured hundreds of runners from schools in the Tri-Cities, Burnaby, New Westminster and Maple Ridge.

Wilmien Verbeek led Gleneagle’s effort, winning the five-kilometre race in 21:29.0, 28.6 seconds ahead of Port Moody Secondary’s Daya Bains, who finished second.

Gleneagle placed three other runners in the top 20; Niamh Richardson placed fourth while Fanghao Zhou was 14th and Ava Bromley finished 15th.

Teams that qualified for the provincial championships, to be held Nov. 2 at Jericho Park in Vancouver, include:

  • Gleneagle
  • Port Moody
  • Heritage Woods
  • Dr. Charles Best
  • Pinetree

The senior boys competition was won by Port Moody’s Heritage Woods Secondary, which placed five of its runners in the top 20, led by Billy Thiele-Crocker, who crossed the finish line in third place. Teammate Coen McMurray wasn’t far behind in fifth place, while Philip Cicha was 12th, Alexander Chan was 16th, and Xavier Wu was 19th.

Gleneagle’s top finisher in the senior boys race was Kai Yan, who finished fourth. Teammate Asher Barrett placed 10th.

The race was won by Dylan Naresh, from Maple Ridge Secondary School. He completed the five kilometre circuit in 17:22.6.

Burnaby North Secondary finished first in the junior girls’ team competition, led by Chloe Gibson, who placed second in the race, less than three seconds behind the winner, Taysia Lennstrom, from Coquitlam’s Centennial Secondary.

Jaylen Jung’s victory in the junior boys race led Dr. Charles Best Secondary to the top of the category’s team standings.

Burnaby Mountain finished second.
