Families that angle together, stay together.
Tri-Cities residents that fancy a day of fishing on the lake are being invited to cast a line at a pair of events over the next several weeks.
Festival Coquitlam is scheduled to host its annual Como Lake Fishing Derby, as well as its Lafarge Lake Family Fishing Day for anglers of all ages to explore the life swimming in local waters.
Both are free to attend, spokesperson Lori McGrath said in a release to the Tri-City News, and interested participants won't need a fishing licence.
The Como Lake Fishing Derby will take place May 28.
The Lafarge Lake Family Fishing Day event is scheduled for Father's Day Sunday (June 18), which is the same weekend when anglers can fish anywhere in B.C. without a licence.
Como Lake
According to Festival Coquitlam, the Como Lake event has brought hundreds of children each year with their parents to fish in the popular pond off Gatensbury Street.
A pancake breakfast is set to be served, by donation, by the Kinsmen Club of Coquitlam, and the Port Coquitlam and District Hunting and Fishing Club.
Prizes are also set to be given to the largest, smallest and strangest catch of the day.
The event takes place from 6 a.m. to noon on May 28.
Lafarge Lake
In past years, hundreds of residents have gathered at Coquitlam's Lafarge Lake in the hopes of catching rainbow trout on a bright summer day.
Activities are set to include fly tying, casting lessons and a salmon raffle, and experts will be on site to teach techniques for catching local trout.
The Kin Club of Coquitlam will also be at this event for a feast of lunch and snacks for a nominal fee.
Prizes will also be handed out at the end of the day.
Family Fishing Day takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 18.
Interested participants to both fishing events are asked to bring the following:
- Basic fishing gear
- Rod and reel
- Fishing line
- Hook
- Bobber
- Weight
- Bait or flies
- Appropriate clothing
- Hat and sunscreen for a hot day
