Our picks: Five free things to do this weekend in the Tri-Cities

Got little ones or out-of-town guests? We've highlighted five free events this weekend in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

With the temperature expected to hover around the mid 20s on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11, Tri-City residents and visitors can get out and enjoy the warm weather.

And the Tri-City News has a few ideas of how families can save some bucks with free activities happening this weekend in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

Here are our five picks for activities — with no entry cost — for people of all ages and abilities to explore around the Tri-Cities:

BC Dumpling Fest 

  • When: Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024
    • 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Where: Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam)
    • Take SkyTrain to the Lafarge Lake–Douglas station and walk 10 minutes east to the festival site. On-leash pets are allowed and bike racks are available for cyclists.
  • What: Organized by the Asian Arts and Culture Society under president Gina Chong, the 3rd annual BC Dumpling Festival features 36 food trucks and lots of entertainment, with a focus this year on the ube siopao, a new sweet take on the Filipino dish. The VIP dumpling eating contest is at 11:30 a.m. with Mayor Richard Stewart, city councillors and corporate sponsor representatives. The Tri-City News is a media sponsor.

Railside Skateboard Competition

  • When: Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024
    • 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Where: Railside Skate Park at Lions Park (2300 Lions Way, Port Coquitlam)
  • What: Cheer on or take part in the skateboard contests. There are two age categories: 11 to 16 years old (registration code 96165), and over 17 years old (registration code 96633). Contestants will be judged on runs and tricks and prizes will be handed out.

  • What: With Spani Pool still under renovation, the City of Coquitlam is offer free drop-in entry at its Eagle Ridge tank, an eight-lane, 25m pool in the City Centre neighbourhood.

Summer Sundays concert

  • When: Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024
    • 2 p.m.
  • Where: Rocky Point Park (2800-block of Murray Street, Port Moody)
  • What: Four acts will be on the PCT Performance Stage for the next Summer Sundays series, a fundraiser for Crossroads Hospice Society. Steve Oliver starts the show at 2 p.m. with guest musicians Alexander Boynton Jr. and Cat Levan; they’ll be followed at 3:30 p.m. by the Ladies Sing the Blues, an ensemble fronted by Joani Bye, Nadine States, Leslie Harris and Catharine St. Germaine and backed by Rob Montgomery and his All Star Band.

Cinema Under the Stars

  • When: Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024
    • 8:45 p.m.
  • Where: Gates Park (2300 Reeve St., Port Coquitlam)
  • What: Grab lawn chairs, blankets, snacks, drinks and bug spray for the City of Port Coquitlam’s screening of the 1982 flick E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the movie starring Henry Thomas as Elliott and Drew Barrymore as Gertie will be shown on an inflatable 26' screen.
