Opinion: Third Port Moody SkyTrain stop should come before massive development

The city is looking into options, per its latest council report on the matter.

Re: City looking at feasibility of third SkyTrain stop (Oct. 21, 2021)

The Millennium rapid transit line across Burnaby has many closely spaced stations that have seen little adjacent redevelopment over the past decade.

So adding a third station on the west side of Port Moody seems reasonable in view of the redevelopment "in the pipe."

The elevated guideway above Short Street should be able to accommodate a new station.

This station would be adjacent to the proposed Andres Wine's Westport Village redevelopment (400+ residential units); a short walk from both the Flavelle Oceanfront (3,400 residential units) and Woodland Park (2,200 residential units) redevelopments and other smaller redevelopments in the Gateway neighbourhood.

The provision of a new north portal rapid transit station in Port Moody must be a prerequisite for these redevelopment projects.

Otherwise, the new residents will be committed to commuting by car.
