The fourth annual Cornhole Classic in Port Coquitlam will be the biggest yet.
The charity event raises money for research into colon cancer.
This year’s tournament will be held Saturday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., in the green arena at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre. That was also the venue for the 2023 edition that raised more than $20,000.
But this year, the stakes are even higher as 100 teams will be competing in a double-elimination format — that’s 20 more than last year.
The Cornhole Classic is the passion project of Shane Goutsis and his family, who were looking for a way to honour his wife’s uncle, Ric Scisson, who died of colon cancer in 2020.
The first classic in 2019, at Cedar Drive Park , attracted 64 teams who amassed $11,000.
Goutsis said cornhole's simplicity gives it universal appeal. Basically teams of two players toss weighted bean bags towards a slanted board, trying to get them through a hole.
“Anybody can play cornhole,” Coutsis said. “You just have to be able to throw.”
Competitors at this years event can battle as pros — for the serious afficianados — amateurs or in the social division, where camaraderie, jokes and even costumes take precedent over cutthroat cornholing.
The top three finishers in each division will get cash prizes, and there’s also a prize for best costume.
There will also be craft breweries, food trucks, live music, a silent auction and 50/50 prizes to keep the fun rolling all day long.
Participants must be over 19 years old.
