Ryan Storgeoff hands a green cart to Sarah Anderson on Westwood Plateau during Thursday morning's roll-out of the new garbage and green waste carts in Coquitlam.
Over the next six weeks, Smithrite will be delivering the carts - plus kitchen catchers and blue bins for glass - to about 25,000 homes that receive curbside collection.
The bear-resistant carts are part of the change-over of the city's solid-waste contract from Smithrite to BFI Canada. Under the new automated program, which starts July 2, homeowners will see the trash picked up on alternating weeks while green waste bins will be collected weekly.
