Mounties hand out texting tickets

Coquitlam RCMP handed out nearly 300 tickets during February's distracted driving safety blitz.

Coquitlam RCMP handed out nearly 300 tickets during February's distracted driving safety blitz.

Officers were at high crash locations throughout Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Belcarra and Anmore watching for drivers who were texting, talking on the phone, putting on make-up or reading a newspaper or book while driving.

"Considering distracted driving was a contributing factor in 45% of all collisions in the area in 2011, our members will continue to target drivers who show a disregard for other road users' safety by using their hand-held devices," said Sgt. Dave Fee of the traffic section in a release.

At least 131 vehicle occupants were also charged for not wearing their seatbelts, while 209 drivers were charged for various intersection violations under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Drivers who need to make a phone call or check their email are advised to use a hands-free device or pull over before getting on the phone.

The fine for using an electronic device without hands-free while driving is $167. Drivers caught texting or emailing can also receive three driver penalty points. Drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program are not permitted to use any electronic device, even if it is hands-free.
