Letter: 'Very rare' to see someone use this Coquitlam–Port Moody bike lane

Re: Guildford Way in Port Moody is too narrow for protected bike lanes in both directions: report (June 21, 2024)

I live on Falcon Drive in Coquitlam, although very close to the boundary with Port Moody.

Almost every day I drive on Guildford Way, either east or west at different times of the day.

It is very, very rare for me to see anyone using the protected bike lane in either direction. I did, however, once see a vehicle that had somehow managed to enter the bike lane and was sticking out in the driver's lane.

The protected bike lane on the north side of Guildford at the intersection with Falcon is dangerous.

The barrier is spot on the intersection which makes it much more difficult to turn right at Falcon especially in inclement weather.

There is an elementary school and two daycare centres close to the intersection and a lot of foot traffic crossing at this spot. There is a main bus route and bus stop just beyond the intersection.

At other intersections, the protected bike lane doesn't finish so close to the intersection.

Bearing in mind that the bike lane isn't used, it seems pointless to extend it to Port Moody, especially if it will entail digging up the meridians, sidewalks, etc., and probably cutting down trees.
