Letter: Guildford Greenway in Coquitlam makes cycling safe

As one of the many users, I thank the visionaries who decided to create the protected lane or Greenway along Guildford Way, this letter writer states.

The Editor:

The Guildford Greenway project enhances the safety, health and lifestyle of local residents.

As one of the many users, I thank the visionaries who decided to create the protected lane or Greenway along Guildford Way.

The previous painted bike lane was less safe.

Motorists tend to cut the corners, especially on the long sweeping right-hand curve to Falcon Drive, endangering bike lane users.

The protected lane makes cycling much safer and reduces the risk of accidents for all road users.

I enjoy an early-morning ride along the Greenway as part of a healthy lifestyle, but it is also practical for appointments or other errands that bring me to the Town Centre.

This means that one less car is looking for parking or adding to congestion.

The practicality of the lane was illustrated on Canada Day when cyclists and e-Scooter riders could take the Greenway home after the fireworks, instead of adding to the long lines of departing cars.

This way, it benefits both users and non-users: The users enjoy a safe ride home; the non-users benefit from less vehicle traffic.

Offering safe and convenient travel choices is a sign of a great place to live.
