Letter: Carney holds leadership at a grave moment in Canadian history

In my opinion of the three main federal leaders, only Mark Carney can take on Trump, this Coquitlam letter writer states.

Dear Editor,

While I am certainly no fan of Canada's Liberal Party, in the spirit of Canadian solidarity in the face of the grave threat to Canadian sovereignty posed by Donald Trump, I want to congratulate Mark Carney upon becoming our prime minister-designate.

Carney assumes the mantle of leadership at a grave moment in Canadian history. Our very existence as a sovereign nation is at stake. If Carney can continue to unite our country and lead us to victory in this unjustified trade war that our former friend and ally the United States launched against us, he will have my respect.

We need a strong and united Canada to see us through this crisis, now is not the time for petty partisan attacks.

In the soon-to-be-called federal election, I will be supporting NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo as she is the only candidate in my riding with the experience to hold the government's feet to the fire. Now is not the time for Port Moody-Coquitlam to send an inexperienced candidate to Ottawa.

In my opinion of the three main federal leaders — Liberal, Conservative and NDP (I do not include the Bloc as they are separatists) — only Carney can take on Trump.

Poilievre for far too long has echoed the MAGA playbook with his everything is broken mantra, his sudden pivot to Canada First is yet another echo of a familiar MAGA rallying cry.

To be honest, when people like Donald Trump and Elon Musk endorse his candidacy, we should all have serious concerns. The only New Democrat who has been acting like a leader through this crisis is soon-to-be-retired NDP MP Charlie Angus; Jagmeet Singh has been conspicuously silent.

So to prime minister-designate Carney and MP Bonita Zarillo, #elbowsup and let's get 'er done.
