Our offices are still open, Tri-City MPs say during prorogation

The Tri-Cities’ two MPs are reminding residents their offices are open while parliament is prorogued.

MPs Ron McKinnon (Liberal, Coquitlam–Port Coquitlam) and Bonita Zarrillo (NDP, Port Moody–Coquitlam) say their staff will continue to help constituents with federal matters — like tax concerns, pensions and immigration — while parliament is suspended.

Last week, Governor General Mary Simon granted a request to prorogue parliament after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as Liberal leader once the party picks a successor; that is scheduled to happen before March 9 and will likely result in an election earlier than October 2025.

“My office is committed to helping our constituents on all federal matters like we have been for the last nine and a half years,” McKinnon told the Tri-City News on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

“I will be spending the next few weeks speaking to residents and local businesses to ensure I am your voice in Ottawa when the next parliamentary session begins.”

As for Zarrillo, she said she will also have her office open as she reaches out to the community during the prorogation, including door knocking, attending events and meeting with groups in her jurisdiction.

Zarrillo is inviting group representatives to reach out during the “down time” and to schedule a meeting by emailing [email protected].

The MPs’ office hours remain the same during the prorogation:

  • Ron McKinnon
  • Bonita Zarrillo
