Kwikwetlem chief to run again

The chief of the Kwikwetlem First Nation will run for a second term.

The chief of the Kwikwetlem First Nation will run for a second term.

Ron Giesbrecht, the band leader who last year drew national controversy for collecting a six-figure bonus as economic development officer, is seeking the top job for another four years.

Giesbrecht, whose mandate ends on April 30, is up against Coun. Ed Hall and George Chaffee in the vote, which takes place on March 31.

Coun. Hall also has his name on the ballot for one of the three council seats along with Dakota Giesbrecht, David Hall, Fred Hulbert and John Peters.

Candidates have until March 16 to withdraw from the race - the same day an all-candidates' meeting will be held at the Kwikwetlem community hall.

Last summer, after the band's audited financial statements were disclosed under the newly implemented federal First Nations Transparency Act, it was revealed Giesbrecht had earned an $800,000 bonus - on top of his $4,800-a-year salary as chief, $16,574 in expenses and $80,000 as economic development officer - as part of a provincial land sale valued at $8 million. Legal action was launched by some members but the suit was later dropped.
