Port Coquitlam parents and caregivers get a three-day head start to sign up their kids for the annual May Days kids bike race.

Registration opens Tuesday, April 1 at 8 a.m. for PoCo residents with children ages three to 12 years old who want to roll through downtown Port Coquitlam on Saturday, May 10 — before the May Day parade; the general public can log in on Friday, April 4.

Last year’s event saw 500 children on wheels loop the track from Shaughnessy Street and McAllister Avenue, next to PoCo City Hall.

This year, the non-competitive event is split into three age categories with multiple starting times to avoid road tie-ups:

  • Ages three to five (100 metres)
    • 10:10 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 10:20 a.m.
    • Register using barcodes 109802, 109803 or 109804
  • Ages five to eight (1.3 kilometres)
    • 10:25 a.m. and 10:30 a.m
    • Register using barcodes 109805 or 109806
  • Ages nine to 12 (2.6 kilometres)
    • 10:35 a.m.
    • Register using barcode 109807

To take part, young cyclists need to provide their own bikes and wear a bike helmet.

Port Coquitlam’s spring festival is in its 102nd year and launches on Sunday, May 4 at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (2150 Wilson Ave.) with a ceremony from 3 to 5 p.m. involving the Royal Party.

Your company or organization can also be in the Rotary May Day parade. The deadline to sign up is Monday, April 15.

After the procession, which starts at 11 a.m., stay for the Party in the Square at the Terry Fox Hometown Square (south of the Port Coquitlam Community Centre), featuring live music, food trucks, a beverage garden and a market.
