Port Moody police impound the vehicle of a driver arrested for impaired driving early Sunday morning, two hours after officers had transported him follwing a drunken disturbance at a wedding reception.

Port Moody police say they’re dumbfounded that the impaired driver of a vehicle officers pulled over on St. Johns Street early Sunday morning was the same man they’d transported to his Vancouver home a couple hours earlier after he’d caused a drunken disturbance at a wedding reception.

In a news release, PMPD spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias said officers first encountered the 29 year-old man when they were called at about 1:45 a.m., Feb. 23, to a wedding reception that was wrapping up in Port Moody’s downtown area. The intoxicated man had become agitated when Good Samaritans were trying to take away his keys after he’d indicated his intention to drive home.

The officers arrested him for breach of peace and took him home with the understanding he’d retrieve his vehicle when he sobered up.

But two hours later, officers spotted a vehicle speeding at 123 kmh on St. Johns Street, right past Port Moody Police headquarters.

Zacharias said the driver was pulled over and it was determined he was the same man officers had transported home earlier. He told them he’d used a ride share to return to Port Moody to get his vehicle.

The driver was arrested for impaired driving and spent the rest of the night in jail. He faces charges under the Motor Vehicle Act, a driving ban, and his vehicle was impounded.

Zacharias said the department has also filed a high-risk driving report with Road Safety B.C. that could result in greater punishment.
