A pair of pie making contests are taking place in the Tri-Cities in September to find the best dessert in the region.

Do you bake the best pie in the Tri-Cities?

Is your dessert better than your friend's dish, your neighbour's, or, dare we say, your mother's?

If the answer is "Yes" to the above, the Port Moody and Coquitlam Farmers Markets are challenging you and others that feel the same to step up to the plate.

The organizations are hosting a pair of pie baking contests in September as part of its fall slate of events.

Open to local amateur bakers, the Port Moody Farmers Market is specifically looking for apple pies to showcase on Wednesday, Sept. 11, while the Coquitlam Farmers Market is open to any fruit flavour recipe on Sunday, Sept. 22.

The ultimate prize: bragging rights — and a ribbon or two.

Port Moody

Interested participants are asked to bring two nine-inch pies: one for the judges and another to be sold by the slice at the market by the Port Moody Recreation Complex (300 Ioco Rd.).

The money raised is earmarked to support events and activities by Grow Local Society, the parent company of the Port Moody and Coquitlam Farmers Markets.

This contest, organizers explain, must be fruit based only with "no dairy fillings in compliance with Fraser Health Authority."

Bakers must provide a list of ingredients or a complete recipe at registration.

A winner will be declared at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 in four categories:

  • Best overall
  • Best traditional (two crust) pie
  • Best non-traditional pie
  • Honourable mention

For more information, you can visit the Port Moody Farmers Market Facebook page, or register online via Grow Local Society.

Coquitlam

Bakers here will be showcase their fruit pie — made from scratch and with locally-grown produce — at the Coquitlam Farmers Market by the Poirier Community Centre (1655 Winslow Ave.).

Judges will taste-test and examine the entries at 10 a.m. on Sept. 22. Winners will be decided based on appearance, flavour, creativity and "WOW" factors.

As well, participants will be given a questionnaire during the process:

  • Why did you bake this type of pie?
  • What is in your pie? Are there any special/unusual ingredients?
  • Is there anything else you want the judges to know?

After the contest is over, the remaining pies will be sold by the slice with the money going towards the market’s kids educational program.
