B.C.'s police watchdog is stepping in to determine if police actions from a wellness check in Coquitlam this past summer caused injuries to a local resident.

In a news release, the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) said it's looking into a case involving a Maillardville man self-reported serious injuries after an "interaction" with Mounties.

RCMP conducted a wellness check on July 19 to check in on one person at a Hart Street home, the IIO explained.

After speaking with him, police decided to apprehend him under the Mental Health Act.

The man in question later reported serious injuries.

"The IIO has commenced an investigation, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident and what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played in the person’s injuries," the IIO added.

The organization is also asking for the public's help with the investigation.

Anyone with more information about the incident is encouraged to call the IIO's toll-free witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or its website.
