It may have been mixed weather this week, but the cities of Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam already have their eyes on summer gatherings.
In Port Coquitlam, to boost block parties around town, the municipality is giving away a Freshmart gift certificate — valued at $150 — to the first 50 applicants approved to host, for food, decorations and supplies.
As well, successful applicants will receive a city-branded barbecue apron to don at their community-building event.
The city encourages neighbours to get together for an afternoon or evening picnic or potluck by their homes or in a city park.
Organizers can also apply to close off a local street or cul-de-sac, with free barriers provided by Dynamic Equipment.
As well, as part of the Port Coquitlam fire department’s Hot Summer Nights program, fire crews can pop by block parties so that attendees check out a fire truck and speak to firefighters about fire safety.
Block party participants are asked to tag the city in their social media postings (@cityofpoco) or email their images to [email protected].
The block parties are in partnership with the Downtown Port Coquitlam Business Improvement Association (BIA).

In Coquitlam, the city is offering $150 in cash grants — plus free liability insurance — to block party hosts to pay for food, supplies and entertainment.
Organizers can also borrow a Block Party Play Kit that includes games and activities, as well as request road closures for cul-de-sacs, lanes and local roads.
This year's block parties in Coquitlam are being sponsored by FortisBC. To apply, visit the city website.
