City halls in Port Coquitlam and Port Moody will glow red on Feb. 11 to mark 211 Day.
The event recognizes the 2-1-1 phone service that operates nationwide to connect Canadians with information about community and government services such as food banks, income assistance programs, housing options as well as legal and mental health resources.
“2-1-1 is a lifeline for people facing challenges in their lives,” said Madeleine Eagleton, the contact centre manager for United Way BC that funds and operates the service in the province, along with the Ministry of Health. “By listening, asking the right questions, and guiding people to the best resources, we’re able to offer critical help when it’s needed most.”
The 2-1-1 service operates around the clock, 365 days a year and is available in more than 240 languages.
According to a news release, housing and mental health services are the most common inquiries.
Among the 19 iconic sites across British Columbia that will be lit with red light are BC Place, the sails at Canada Place, Science World, Vancouver City Hall, the B.C. Parliament Buildings, Royal BC Museum, the White Rock Pier and Burnaby City Hall.
National sites include the Calgary Tower, Niagara Falls, the Big Nickel in Sudbury, the CN Tower, Montreal’s Olympic Stadium and Founders Hall in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
