Got extra overwrap and packaging around the house?
Port Moody has scheduled a centralized recycling day this week for local residents to properly dispose of their holiday materials, including paper gift wrap, boxes and Styrofoam.
The event is set to help the City of the Arts avoid potential fines.
According to Recycle BC, violations can cost as much as $5,000 per load of material, for up to $120,000 per year, which would ultimately be passed on to taxpayers.
The organization adds holiday recyclables are among the most common items incorrectly placed into blue carts each year in addition to electronics, hard- and soft-cover books, and even Tupperware.
City officials are encouraging residents to bring any extra holiday recycling to its free drop-off event at the Port Moody Recreation Complex (300 Ioco Rd.) parking lot beside the tennis courts.
Items that won't be taken during the five-hour station are ribbons, bows, foil gift wrap, glass and household garbage.
Accepted materials, which must be clean and dry, include the following:
- Paper gift wrap
