A nationally funded group is hoping to get more Tri-City girls and women into politics.
On Saturday, the Young Women Civic Leaders - a two-year project in the Tri-Cities, Burnaby and Surrey that is supported by the Justice Education Society - will host its first gathering to hear stories from female community leaders.
The Stepping Stones event will happen from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the SUCCESS office at Henderson Place (1163 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) and will feature Port Moody Coun. Zoe Royer, Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Jane Shin and Joyce Murray, the MP for Vancouver-Quadra.
Spokesperson Madelaine Simpkin, a Coquitlam resident, said the aim is to encourage more women to get involved in government, where women - half the population - are under-represented.
Currently, there is one woman on Coquitlam city council, three women on Port Moody council and none in Port Coquitlam council.
The Young Women Civic Leaders is targeted at women aged 15 to 25 and helps to provide candidates with opportunities for getting involved in the process.
