A 22-year-old woman is due in court in March as a series of charges have been laid from a Coquitlam collision 13 months ago that seriously injured members of a Burnaby family.
Flight from police and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm were approved for Vancouver resident Nupur Singla on Jan. 18 as she was involved in a crash with a family of five that left three seriously injured — including two kids under 13 years old.
The incident took place on the Brunette Avenue overpass at Highway 1 eastbound around 9 a.m. on Dec. 27, 2020.
A police officer was conducting radar speed detection when a grey Dodge Charger was reportedly speeding by.
They attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver took the off-ramp at Brunette Avenue where the vehicle collided with a Kia Sorento stopped at the intersection.
This type of investigation is very complex in part due to the technical nature of investigating collisions,
explains BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) spokesperson S/Sgt. Quentin Frewing in a release today (Jan. 26).
As a result, it takes considerable time and effort from many police officers and experts to build the file to the standard expected of Crown Counsel before it can be sent for charge recommendation.
Frewing adds, after the BCHP took over the investigation, the charges were eventually tabled after several search warrants, witness statements, evidence gathering and technical reports.
The department also sought help from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, the Integrated Forensic Identification Section and the RCMP Forensic Laboratory.
Singla is set to make her first appearance in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court on March 2.
No other information is being released at this time.
