A cyclist is lucky to be alive after running a red light in Port Moody Monday morning.
Just before 8 a.m. the 26-year-old Port Coquitlam man was cycling down the Clarke Road hill and went through the red light at St. Johns Street and Clarke Road, hitting the front end of a minivan that was pulling out from Albert Street to turn left on to Clarke.
"The cyclist was launched off the bicycle and landed on the roadway, receiving minor injuries to the leg," said Const. Luke van Winkel. Multiple witnesses reported the cyclist ran through a "solid red light," he added.
The man was treated in hospital and was issued a violation ticket.
"The cyclist is quite fortunate since he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident," van Winkel said. "This serves as a reminder to all cyclists that the rules of the road apply to everyone equally."
Van Winkel cautioned cyclists to give themselves to be aware of the conditions and to give themselves enough time to stop, and for drivers to be alert for more cyclists on the road as the weather improves.
