Court hearing for accused hit-and-run driver pushed back

Cory Sater, the Coquitlam man charged in the Feb. 19 hit-and-run deaths Charlene Reaveley and Lorraine Cruz, will not make his scheduled appearance in Port Coquitlam provincial court on Thursday.

Cory Sater, the Coquitlam man charged in the Feb. 19 hit-and-run deaths Charlene Reaveley and Lorraine Cruz, will not make his scheduled appearance in Port Coquitlam provincial court on Thursday.

Sater was due to appear in Port Coquitlam court by a video link from his cell at the North Fraser Pre-trial Centre on Thursday morning but a court clerk told The Tri-City News that his lawyer has asked to push the date back to March 17.

Sater raised the hackles of many in the community, including the families of Reaveley and Cruz, when he chose not to appear at the initial Feb. 23 hearing of the charges against him.

At that hearing, Sater's lawyer, Tony Serka, appeared on behalf of his client to make the unusual request that Sater remain in police custody at the Port Coquitlam detention centre until a date for his bail hearing was set.

On Wednesday, the court clerk told The Tri-City News that Serka had made the application to push the court date back that day because he wasn't able to make the Thursday hearing.

Messages left with Serka's office hadn't been returned before publication.

Sater stands charged with 10 offences including two counts of impaired driving causing death, one count of impaired driving causing injury in the maiming of Cruz's boyfriend, Paolo Calimahin, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident.

Memorial services for Cruz, 26, and Reaveley, a 30-year-old mother of four, were held last weekend.
