Conservation Officer Service (COS) is warning people to be cautious in the Sasamat Lake area after a cougar attack on a dog and very close encounter with a family yesterday.

Conservation Officer Service (COS) is warning people to be cautious in the Sasamat Lake area after a cougar attack on a dog and very close encounter with a family yesterday.

On Tuesday night a dog suffered numerous puncture wounds and scratches when it was attacked by a cougar. Conservation officers were able to confirm that a cougar was involved but were unable to track the cougar.

They believe this attack was defensive and not predatory due to the injuries the dog sustained.

The Conservation Officer Service (COS) recommends avoiding the area until further notice or at the least keeping pets on a leash and not walking alone in the Sasamat Lake area.

All sightings or conflicts with cougars should be immediately reported to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
