Coquitlam Rotary wants your documents and personal papers — to shred

Coquitlam Rotary uses the shredding event as a fundraiser for some of its programs, like food hampers for families in need

Coquitlam Rotary will be holding its annual spring shredding event on April 13 in the parking lot of the Canadian Tire on Lougheed Highway at King Edward Street.

Your old documents and personal papers gathering dust in a closet or basement can help feed local families or send high school students to post-secondary studies.

The Rotary Club of Coquitlam is hosting its annual shred-a-thon April 13 at the Canadian Tire parking lot at Lougheed Highway and King Edward Street.

The drive-thru event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and all shredding is done securely on-site by a special truck.

Donations for the service help support programs run by the club, including weekly Starfish food hampers and Christmas food hampers and bursaries for high school students heading to college or university programs, as well as helping out local non-profit organizations like SHARE Family and Community Services.

Coquitlam Rotary first launched its spring shredding event in 2021 after several of the group’s usual fundraising efforts like whisky tasting and beer festivals had been impacted by COVID-19 public health restrictions in place at the time.

“Rotary is about service above self,” said Dr. Jim Lane, who was the club’s president presiding over that first shredding effort.

“We want to give back to the community.”
