More than 5,000 pounds in two days.
A local community group is hoping to break that fundraising record set last year for the benefit of residents and families struggling to put food on the table.
The Rotary Club of Port Coquitlam Centennial's annual Generous Hearts Food Drive is set for next weekend.
All proceeds — non-perishable foods and financial contributions — are earmarked for SHARE Family and Community Services, including its food bank in Port Moody (2615 Clarke St.).
It's the second consecutive year for the food drive after a brief hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, the club collected more than 5,100 pounds of food, and event organizer Pat Frouws is hoping the community can help shatter that record.
"We want to create a better future and make a difference, " reads PoCo Centennial Rotary's mission statement.
"We know we can't do it alone, so we get our support and strength from other Rotarians both in our community and across the world."
Interested residents are encouraged to donate any of the following non-perishable items for SHARE:
- Canned fruit
- Cooking Oil
- Juice (no sugar added)
- Granola bars or Whole grain crackers
- Lentils and beans (canned or dried)
- Rice
- Tomato Paste
- Gluten Free Products
- Flour
- Peanut Butter
The Generous Hearts Food Drive is scheduled to take place March 11 and 12.
Fundraisers will be collecting donations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Port Coquitlam Walmart — located at 2150 Hawkins St. near Fremont Village.
As well, Frouws tells the Tri-City News the Supercentre will also be selling pre-packaged food bags at $10 each with the money going directly to SHARE.
