Coquitlam’s Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex and the City Centre Aquatic Centre should be in tip-top shape when they’re reopened after the COVID-19 public health emergency has passed.
The city is fast-tracking annual maintenance and cleaning at the facilities, which have been closed since March 16.
The work includes: draining the pools and deep-cleaning the tanks; re-grouting tiles and touching up paint; cleaning the fitness centres and equipment, lockers, change rooms, showers, life jackets and pool toys; and inspecting and servicing mechanical systems and other equipment.
The work at Poirier, which normally requires a four-week shutdown, will also comprise lighting, deck showers and controls of maintenance systems.
At the aquatic centre, the moveable floor and wave machine will also be serviced, and the flooring on the pool deck will be replaced. Its annual shutdown normally takes five weeks.
“Completing these tasks early will allow the two facilities to provide continuous service to the community once it’s safe for them to reopen,” said a press release.
The shutdown at the aquatic centre has also allowed an instructor from the Recreation Facilities Association of B.C. to create a video of mechanical components that would normally be difficult to access. The footage will be included in an interactive online course for students in the pool operators’ program at Langara College, as well as for professional development of Coquitlam’s pool operators.
